Can you tell us a little bit about yourself? What’s the story behind you and your business?
I live in Richmond, Virginia with my husband and two little boys. I started making felt flowers because I was looking for a creative outlet that balanced all the masculine energy in my house! I discovered felt flowers while experimenting with my Cricut Maker. I enjoyed that first project so much that I took a class, and immersed myself in the world of felt flower making! I started out simple but now enjoy making a variety of items, especially custom arrangements!
Where do you draw inspiration and motivation from? How do you stay creative?
I draw my inspiration from wherever I find flowers, in nature, in paintings, wedding bouquets, interior design. If it involves flowers it inspires me! I stay creative by pushing myself to expand my boundaries by improving my designs and techniques, and tackling new designs and different kinds of flowers.
What does your creative process look like from start to finish?
I generally start with a photograph or drawing of a flower that inspires me. Depending on the type of flower I either design a template for my Cricut to cut the felt, or I will hand cut the shapes that I need. I will study the model as I assemble the flower and employ the various techniques that I have learned from others or discovered on my own to get just the right look. I will continue making prototypes until I’m satisfied with the end result. I’m still getting there with some flowers!
What’s your current favorite podcast, music, or tv show that you’re hooked on and why?
I’ve always enjoyed listening to Young House Love Has a Podcast. I’ve always enjoyed interior design and John and Sherry are so entertaining!
Name one thing not many people know about you.
I actually grew up on a hobby sheep farm. I raised Dorset sheep and participated in 4H. My business name comes from my farm, Whitmarsh Farm.
What are your top three values in life?
Hard work, growth, reliability.
Do you have any business challenges and/or goals you’re hoping to crush over the next 6 months?
I am just getting started so my goals right now are to just get my work out there and connect with people who enjoy it. I am currently working on a bridal bouquet which I have really enjoyed so I would love to have more opportunities to create bridal flowers in the future.
Do you have any advice for all the small handmade business owners out there who are just getting started?
I am just getting started myself, but the number one thing I have heard from others is to just stick with it! The overnight success stories are really just people who worked hard and didn’t give up!
